Match Summary

Heat 1 did not start to well for the Brummies as Kevin Wölbert touched the tapes and was excluded. Ales Dryml came in for Kevin for the rerun. From the start, Ales Dryml was electric as both Brummies led until half way around the first corner when the Panthers got past Krzysztof Kasprzak only for Nicki Pedersen to make a mistake off the fourth bend and Krzysztof through for third place. A heat advantage against Nicki Pedersen was as welcome as it was unexpected.

Norbert Kosciuch put Ales Dryml in his place in Heat 2 by winning impressively. Claus Vissing also looked good leaving dakota North trailing in last place until his retirement on the third lap.

Heat 3 looked like it was going Birmingham's way in the first couple of laps. Ben Barker was leading all the way from the tapes with Krzysztof Buczkowski behind him. Buczkowski was in constant danger from Danny King during the first half of the race however Danny's race fell apart on the last bend of the last lap as Kacper Gomolski found some grip a little wider out than anyone else was riding at the time, and rounded Danny to snatch third place on the line.

The first of the nights falls came on the last lap of Heat 4. As a consequence the race was awarded to Ales Dryml who comfortably led all the way. The excitement was between Troy Batchelor and Daniel Nermark who were passing each other for fun for a couple of laps, before Batchelor found a racing line that kept Daniel at bay. With Daniel being held up by Batchelor, Dakota North was able to close up, and on the fourth bend of the third lap, he ran into Daniel's rear wheel and fell off, causing the race to be halted. North incurred a broken finger and was withdrawn from the meeting as a result.

Krzysztof Kasprzak won Heat 5 in some style, leading home fellow Poles Buczkowski and Gomolski. Worryingly, Kevin Wölbert was a long way off the pace.

Nicki Pedersen came alive in Heat 6. Daniel Nermark made a good start from gate 1 whilst Pedersen took Claus Vissing and Linus Sundstrom very wide. Pedersen discovered some grip on the outside line and passed Daniel down the back straight. Meanwhile, following a collision between Sundstrom and Vissing some damage was caused to Claus's bike, causing him to retire. That was a shame as Claus was looking quite competitive up until that point.

Ben Barker raised some eyebrows in Heat 7. Whereas Troy Batchelor Danny King and Norbert Kosciuch, all went wide on the first bend, Ben put his front wheel onto the centre green and took the shortest way around, instantly gaining 10 yards, to give him a winning position. With Danny holding Kosciuch off, the Brummies made up the loss of the previous heat.

Ales Dryml led Heat 8 briefly but Linus Sundstrom got past him on lap 3 with a blistering turn of speed. It seems that the Panther's local knowledge of how their track changes during the course of a meeting is putting them in good stead when it comes to bike setup as what Sundstrom did was a product of horsepower rather than brain power.

Buczkowski won Heat 9 from start to finish ahead of Daniel Nermark Claus Vissing proved that he was competitive around this track as he led home Gomolski for a shared heat.

Further evidence that the Panthers and their track were singing in harmony came in Heat 10. Pedersen and Sundstrom gated better and were simply a lot quicker than Ben Barker and Danny King.

Troy Batchelor got his first win in Heat 11 by out-gating Krzysztof Kasprzak. Kosciuch got past Krzysztof in another demonstration of applied horsepower on the back straight of the first lap to partner Batchelor home for a second consecutive maximum. Again Kevin Wölbert was off the pace.

Heat 12 had to be rerun. Gomolski came off after losing control on the exit of the second bend in spectacular style, being lucky not to take any other riders off with him. In the rerun the Brummies gate well but Kosciuch went for where he knew the dirt would be and passed both Brummies to win by a distance.

Heat 13 also had to be rerun, and again it was a Peterborough rider to blame, this time troy Batchelor, although he might say that Nicki Pedersen was to blame for cutting him up. In the end, it was Pedersen who led in the rerun, with Krzysztof Kasprzak hot on his heels, and even getting by on the entry to the third lap, only for Pedersen to firmly slam the door shut on him against the kerb. Daniel Nermark kept out of trouble in third place to share the points.

Heat 14 became the third heat in a row that needed reruns. Firstly, Kosciuch gets seriously out of shape on the first corner and takes out Buczkowski, for which Kosciuch excluded. Then there was a horrible crash in virtually the same place, after Claus Vissing picked up a load of grip, wheelied out of control and went down with Ales Dryml having no way to avoid him, and coming off as well, and then Buczkowski going over the top of Ales before flying over his own handlebars and ending up in a heap at the entrance to the third bend. Claus and Buczkowski walked away from the crash but Ales was taken to hospital where a broken rib, punctured lung and additional collar bone and shoulder injuries were diagnosed. Buczkowski finally rode an uncontested second rerun, some 5 minutes after the 10pm curfew.

The significance of the curfew was that at 10pm when the referee should have called a halt to proceedings, the Brummies were only 6 points behind and should have earned a league point. a 10.05pm after the rerun, the Brummies were 9 points behind and destined to go home empty handed.

With all thoughts turned to Ales's well being, Heat 15 didn't seem to matter so much any more. As it was, Batchelor and Pedersen out-gated Ben Barker and, Krzysztof Kasprzak to win from tapes to flag.
